South Brisbane’s 4.5km heritage trail is one of 23 trails in the Brisbane region. The historic path takes pedestrians on a journey exploring over 150 years of heritage through local buildings and locations.
Unfortunately, this heritage isn’t being championed, and has fallen by the wayside.
Having walked the trail, a number of issues are apparent, including an absence of signage, inaccessible locations and a biased path that disregards certain locations.
The only way to currently follow the trail is through the Council's outdated Google Earth map.
A refreshed trail path was constructed and implemented into a new revitalised wayfinding map using the same technology.
The original historic imagery and descriptions were preserved, and QR codes have been placed on the trail's signage to provide access.
South Brisbane's heritage trail's existing visual identity looked amateur and dated, and was in need of a refresh.
To keep the redesign grounded, some visual language from both the Brisbane City Council (BCC), and South Brisbane Heritage Trail were retained.
Notably, a desaturated BCC gold is used as an accent colour, and the iconic dashes have been repurposed to communicate direction and wayfinding.
Each location required new signs to tell their stories, and to display navigation information.
